amite county, mississippi, 1699-1886 volume 2
Here is another book by Mr. Casey on Amite County, Mississippi. It should be considered a companion volume to Volume 3, also in print at this time. Mississippi was formed from land ceded to the United States by South Carolina and Georgia. Part of the British Province of West Florida and part of the land ceded by the French made up the rest of the Territory of Mississippi in 1798. The Territory of Alabama was formed from the Territory of Mississippi in 1817. In 1817, statehood was granted to Mississippi. Amite County was created in 1809. It is located in the famed Natchez District of Mississippi which was considered one of the first outposts in the Southwest. Most of the early leaders in the pioneer Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian movements in the Southwest were at some time Amite County residents. The major portion of this book is devoted to abstracts of minutes from the original books of the Baptist and Presbyterian Churches located within Amite County, Mississippi. The remainder of this volume is devoted to diaries and autobiographies of Methodist ministers, association records for Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian Churches, and other data from various sources. Even though this book is not filled with the usual legal records such as wills, deeds, and marriages, it is within these church minutes that living portraits of an individuals likes and dislikes, adjustments and maladjustments, successes and failures may most often be discovered. Also, the day to day philosophy of the people and the basic human emotions may be seen in the various pages of the church minutes.
