contributions for the genealogies of the first settlers of ancient county of albany [ny], from 1630 to 1800 The first settlers of Albany, New York were Dutch; in the 18th century, however, Albany claimed an admixture of English and Palatine Germans, the three nationalities together providing the axis on which this genealogical compendium of Albany families rests. Typically, the articles, which are arranged in alphabetical order by family name, give the names of husbands, wives and children and dates of birth, marriage and death, and they are laced with incidental references to land holdings, occupations, and places of residence. A key to Dutch surnames, which are occasionally or constantly omitted in the ancient records of Albany and Schenectady, is prefixed to the work. An index of 7,000 entries helps to coordinate this research. In the preparation of materials for this work, the compiler drew on the baptism and marriage registers of the First Reformed Church of Albany, laboring as well with records from other sources, such as wills, deeds, mortgages, marriage contracts, and a variety of other matter found in the offices of the Albany County and City Clerks.

early albany county, new york, death records 1654-1883
early records of the city and county of albany and colony of rensselaerswyck: volume 4 (mortgages 1, 1658-1660, and wills 1-2, 1681-1765) Published originally as History Bulletin II by the New York State Library, this work is composed of two parts: (1) a miscellaneous record of deeds, mortgages, bonds, powers of attorney, and depositions running from January 10, 1658 to November 4, 1660; and (2) a series of wills, inventories, and settlements of estates from January 5, 1681 to October 30, 1765. The contents, which were abstracted from records found in the Albany County clerks office, were translated from the original Dutch by Jonathan Pearson and readied for publication by A.J.F. Van Laer. The deeds, mortgages, and related property records have the virtue of tracing the chain of title to real estate from one colonist to another. The wills, inventories, and settlements of estates, which comprise about half of the volume, were translated from a manuscript volume in the clerks office entitled Wills, Part 1 & 2, 1691-1835; however, only those wills written in Dutch are included here. The remainder may be found in the [New York] Calendar of Wills, compiled by Berthold Fernow, which is also available from Clearfield Company. The wills, of course, not only disclose the disposition of property but also divulge the names of two or more generations of persons connected to each decedent. In all, the index to this volume holds the key to the identities of several thousand 17th- and 18th-century inhabitants of Albany and Rensselaerswyck.

indian ladder: a history of life in the helderbergs The book is a history of the settlement of the Helderberg Mountains near what is presently the John Boyd Thacher State Park outside of Albany, New York. The work starts with a broad sketch of the early period of Native American occupation and European settlement, and narrows in the final chapter to the development of the Indian Ladder community through the first two decades of the twentieth century. Intervening chapters examine the events of the Revolution in the Helderbergs and the Anti-renter War that brought about the collapse of the manorial system. The Second Dutch Reformed Church of Berne and the first camp established exclusively for young women, Camp Pinnacle, had an impact on the area and their stories are presented. The growth and decay of tourism on Thompsons and Warners lakes are also examined. Finally, the development of the John Boyd Thacher Park with its impressive escarpment is the focus of an instructive narrative on the geography of the region.

minutes of the commissioners for detecting and defeating conspiracies in the state of new york: albany county sessions, 1778-1781 The Commissioners for detecting and defeating Conspiracies, was officially created on February 5, 1778, in response to the invasion of New York by the British army, and the fear of domestic foes, such as the Tories. The nine Commissioners, aided by armed forces, traveled throughout New York, where they sought out and arrested “enemies of the State”. This 3 volume work analyzes the laws passed for the repression of disaffection and disloyalty in the state of New York. Volume I: 1778-1779 covers inquistiorial bodies of New York during the American Revolution and the origin of the Commissioners, operations of the Commissioners as revealed by Albany County Board proceeding, and minutes of Commissioners for Conspiracies meetings. Volum II: 1780-1781 continues with the minutes of the Commissioners for Conspiracies meetings, followed by Appendix I: Laws, Appendix II: Financial Accounts, and Apendix III: Miscellanea. Volume III: Analytical Index is “Closely analytical, by persons, places and subjects. The vagaries that occur in personal and place nomenclature, so common to the period, have been preserved in parentheses after the standard entry or are pointed out by cross-references, which have been used freely for this purpose, as well as for calling attention to correlated or synonymous topics.” This volume is a “magnet with which to extract the ore from a rich mine of operations of comissioners for conspiracies during the American Revolution.”

records of the reformed dutch church of albany, new york, 1683-1809. marriages, baptisms, members, etc. Between the years 1904 and 1927, in eight separate Year Books, The Holland Society of New York published the records of the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany, 1683-1809, consisting of exhaustive lists of marriages, baptisms, and members of the Dutch community in the vicinity of Albany. Established as early as 1642, this church was the center of one of the most prosperous communities in colonial America, and its members provided an important source both of migration and pioneer leadership throughout the entire period of westward expansion. Thousands upon thousands left their traces in these church records, and from them we are able to deduce a remarkable posterity. With the approval of The Holland Society these published records-heretofore quite scarce, as the Year Books were originally published in small quantities- have been consolidated and brought forth in a single, convenient volume, now readily available to the genealogist and librarian. Our publication includes an Introduction by Louis Duermyer, librarian of The Holland Society, and consists of eight continuous sections, or parts, each excerpted from a different volume of the Year Book of The Holland Society of New York. Each section is complete in itself for a designated period and is indexed according to an independent sequence of page numbers. Thus there are eight sets of page numbers and eight indexes. This should not occasion much difficulty, however, as the sections succeed one another in chronological order.
