a genealogical history of robert adams of newbury, mass., and his descendants, 1635-1900
Born in England in 1602, Robert Adams traveled to Ipswich, MA in 1635 with his wife and 2 children. He is thought to be originally from Devonshire, and to be the son of Robert and Elizabeth Sharlon or Sharland. This would make him a cousin of Henry Adams of Braintree (later Quincy, MA), the ancestor of the presidents, John and John Quincy Adams. The work begins by listing the children of Robert Adams. Each entry provides the name, place of birth, date of birth, date and place of death, and any other pertinent historical information known about the persons included, such as: date of marriage, name of spouse, spouses birthplace, children and military service. This work follows the Adams family history through 10 generations. There are 3 original surname indices: Names of males with name of their father; Female names with name of Adams; Names other than Adams.

a history of newfoundland from the english, colonial and foreign records
From 1497 to the permanent settlement in Virginia and the landing of the Pilgrim fathers in 1620, Newfoundland was the only colony and the only possession in North America occupied and governed by Englishmen. This period of over a century is completely overlooked by American historians. To the early American settlers Newfoundland was the parent colony, a meager and haggard kind of mother, yet she saved the ancient colony of Virginia from semi-starvation by a timely cargo of fish. When the New York settlers first tried to establish a fishery in Sandy Hook, it was to this colony they applied for assistance and men. The same Devonshire adventurers who traded to and colonized Newfoundland were the first to make a similar attempt in New England. The author has endeavored to show the close connection between this ancient colony and the young English settlements on the continent—the story of early struggles and mutual aid between Newfoundland and especially New England. His sources were unpublished records, official documents and manuscripts. Lavishly illustrated, this is the ultimate history of Newfoundland, with information about Labrador, the Indians, Moravian missionaries, and the later developments of lumbering, railroads, hunting and much more. It contains a large fold-out map of Newfoundland, smaller maps within the text, appendices, chronology, statistics, bibliography, lists of manuscripts, and an original name and subject index.

a sort of peace corps: wilfred grenfells labrador volunteers
Sir Wilfred Grenfell was one of the great humanitarians of the 20th century. This English surgeon founded a medical mission in 1892 that strove for more than 80 years to serve the impoverished people of Labrador and northern Newfoundland. His mission brought medical care, schools, and orphanages to coastal villages beset by untreated disease and injuries, malnutrition, and poverty. This book is about the mission and its volunteers-some famous in their later years, most of them not-what they did, what effect they had on peoples lives and how the experience affected them. They were in fact a sort of Peace Corps. An abundance of historical data is woven into numerous enthralling stories including the gripping account of Grenfells perilous adventure on a drifting ice pan. Many accounts are given first-hand. Recruits (3,500 of them) came from every walk of life, and included Frances Sayre, Cyrus Vance, Nelson and Laurance Rockefeller, and Henry Cabot Lodge. Ninety percent of the corps came from the United States, making this Americas first major overseas volunteer movement.

acadian genealogy and notes concerning the expulsion (canada)
Gaudet, undoubtedly an expert in Acadian genealogy, first presented this work in 1905 to the Canadian Archives. Information in this book was gathered from private and public sources in Canada, the United States, France, and Britain. Many church and notarial records were either not found, damaged, or incomplete. Nevertheless, Gaudet compiled genealogies for more than 100 Acadian families--similar in work to Tanguays dictionary for Acadians. Included are genealogies on three families--Bourgeois, Lanoue and Belliveau.

atlas and gazetteer: nevada
This atlas will be an invaluable resource for genealogical researchers. Each 11" x 15" chart is extremely detailed and maps back roads (paved & unpaved), along with trails, forests, mountains, and all lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams. Together, the maps in the set cover the entire state in the same fashion as the 1:250,000 series of geological survey maps issued by the U. S. government. A place name gazetteer identifies even the tiniest village and country crossroad. Most importantly, the atlas identifies many of the smallest watercourses which researchers can use to locate property and family sites.

before the kings daughters: the filles a marier, 1634-1662
Before the state-sponsored immigration program that sent nearly 800 women know as Filles du Roi to Quebec, 262 brave and adventurous women made the journey to New France on their own. Sent by relatives and religious organizations or enlisting on their own account, these women did not benefit from a paid passage and dowry drawn from the Kings treasury, but they did face the same if not worse hardships and dangers. Known as the Filles a Marier or "marriageable girls," they were the first single women to set foot in the colony since its return from the English in 1632. True pioneers and heroines, they left their homes in France to found new ones in the New World. The book - the first work dedicated solely to this group of pioneer women - tells their story, collectively and individually. It first examines the much-misunderstood early immigration of women to New France, explaining the need for women in the colony, the difficulties in increasing the population and the unfounded assertions that these women were prostitutes, not pioneers. The book then includes individual biographies of each of these 262 single women and concludes with a table of arrivals per year, an appendix of supporting documentation (marriage and enlistment contracts and inventories), a glossary, index of husbands and a comprehensive index to the book.

births, marriages, and deaths of adams county, pennsylvania, 1852-1854
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania did not start recording marriages before 1885 and births and deaths were not recorded until 1906. An earlier abortive attempt was in effect from 1852-1854. The main problem with this early effort was that it was voluntary rather than compulsory, and that county officials were employed as registrars. With no mandated compliance, and no penalties for non-compliance, as one might expect, compliance was very spotty. Thus these records can be a source of disappointment for their omissions, and great elation if one locates the individual sought, since these records sometimes contain certain information thats unavailable from any other source. Copied from microfilm produced by the Genealogical Society of Utah from the originals in the office of the Secretary of the Commonwealth, this series of records may be what you are seeking.

boise: an illustrated history
Boises history is a special one: few American communities of comparable size have overcome the disadvantages of geography as successfully as has this “City of Trees.” Located in a remote mountain and desert location, Boises development was largely shaped by two factors: isolation, and a determination to not let it stand in the way. No other major city-state capital had such a difficult time obtaining railroad transportation, or such as easy time getting a modern airport. As this book reveals, the Boise of today justifies the great investment of pioneer effort that was necessary to build this city of distinction.

cd: genealogical records: ontario and nova scotia settlers, 1790-1860
Early settlers of Nova Scotia and Ontario included American colonists (particularly Loyalists) as well as English, Scottish, and Irish immigrants. Among the six titles reproduced here, youll find historical essays on the settlement of Nova Scotia and Ontario, Loyalist lists, population returns, maps, and immigration records. Originally published by the Genealogical Publishing Company, these books reference approximately 131,000 individuals. Nova Scotia Immigrants to 1867, Volumes I and II by Leonard H. Smith Volume I brings together a comprehensive collection of abstracts on Nova Scotia immigrants spanning more than 500 pages. The result of more than a decade of work, it brings together dozens of manuscript sources from the Public Archives of Nova Scotia and from archives in Fredericton, Church Point, Ottawa, Boston, London, and Paris as well as 450 articles from Nova Scotia periodicals. Sources for the information include township books, passenger lists, and church land, passenger, probate, and vital records. Fully sourced, the information that youll find about an individual generally includes name, occupation, place of origin, age, family members, name of ship, date of arrival, and military affiliation. Volume II identifies immigrants reported in selected periodicals published outside Nova Scotia and selected diaries and journals, generally providing name, place of origin, names of spouse and parents, date and place of arrival, and source citation. Among the most comprehensive sourcebooks on Nova Scotia immigrants ever published, these two volumes are a great tool for Scottish, Irish, English, German, or Loyalist ancestral research. Loyalists And Land Settlement In Nova Scotia by Marion Gilroy This scarce work encompasses all surviving information on the nearly 10,000 Loyalists who were eligible for land in Nova Scotia. Each Loyalist is identified by name, date and site of grant, acreage, and, in some cases, the individuals military rank. Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, Genealogies Transcribed From The Yarmouth Herald by George S. Brown In nearly 1,000 pages, this volume focuses almost exclusively on New England families who migrated to Nova Scotia around the time of the Revolutionary War (many of them descended from Mayflower colonists). Published between 1896 and 1910, George Browns columns in the "Yarmouth Herald" traced families from their earliest known origins in the old world to the end of the nineteenth century. Combined, his columns amount to a virtual encyclopedia of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia families. In addition to the 186 articles collected here, youll find an Introduction by the noted Nova Scotia authority Colonel Leonard H. Smith Jr. and additional articles containing selected Yarmouth source records. Early Ontario Settlers by Norman K. Crowder In nearly 200 pages, this book contains official records of the early settlers of Upper Canada, or Ontario from 1783 through 1789. Among the information collected here, youll find population returns, provisioning lists, settlers location lists, maps, and lists of immigrant arrivals. Many of the settlers named in the records were from the American colonies (especially New Yorks Albany area and Mohawk Valley). The core of the work consists of two provisioning, or ration, lists for 1784 and 1786. Usually, youll learn the following information about an individual listed: name of head of household, place of settlement, age, and statistical details of the family. Ontario People: 1796-1803 by E. Keith Fitzgerald A transcription of the District Loyalist Rolls of 1796, this volume records individuals who appeared in court to confirm their land rights and possibly to obtain Loyalists status for the benefit of their children. For an individual listed here, youll often find their full name, township, and place of residence. Youll also find maps of Upper Canada.

death notices from the canada christian advocate, 1858-1872
Notices from a newspaper published by the Methodist Episcopal Church, primarily relating to Ontario.
by Reverend Donald A. McKenzie
|
death notices from the christian guardian, 1836-1850 (ontario, canada)
Extracts from a Methodist newspaper of Ontario, first in the series. The Christian Guardian was a newspaper published in Ontario by the Methodist Church, the largest denomination in 1800s Canada. McKenzie compiled all the death notices and obituaries from this newspaper in one alphabetical sequence. He also included news items which reported accidents and other misfortunes naming persons who died as a result. Not all persons named in these various notices were Methodists. The death notices generally provide the date and place of death and the age of the deceased. The obituaries provide in addition a wealth of other information including in most cases date and place of birth, the name of the spouse, occasionally with the year of marriage, and for persons not born in Ontario the date of immigration. For those born in the British Isles the county of birth is stated and in many instances the parish as well. Numerous emigrants from the United States are named, particularly from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania but also from other states. There is in addition mention of many residents of the Province of Quebec. For these reasons and more Dr. McKenzies excellent compilation has taken its place as one of the great reference works for Ontario genealogy and biography.

early new brunswick (canada) probate records, 1785-1835
This important contribution to the history and genealogy of the Maritime Provinces contains detailed abstracts of all the extant probate records of New Brunswick from the time it was set off from Nova Scotia as a separate province until 1835. The abstracts were made from the probate files at the New Brunswick Provincial Archives, and were cross-checked against the records of the individual counties. In addition, whenever there are conflicting data, further research was done using other sources. Whenever the conflicts could not be resolved, it is so indicated in the abstracts. The abstracts are quite complete, giving residences, occupations, relationships, and other items of genealogical interest for all the parties mentioned in the files. The entries are arranged alphabetically by the name of the deceased or other principal, and there is a cross-index to all the buried names.

french and indian war notices abstracted from colonial newspapers, volume 3, 1758 - 1759
Abercrombies humiliating defeat at Ticonderoga in 1758 was the last straw for the beleaguered British Army. After three years of attempts to remove the French from their settlements and forts on English territory, the British resolved to replace their inept, politically appointed commanders with reputable generals. The new strategy proposed and adopted was to combine the British regulars, provincial forces and militias into three expeditions to attack the French on three fronts simultaneously, and to take all of Canada, ridding North America of all French interests. One by one the French forts fell: DuQuesne, Frontenac, Louisbourg, Ticonderoga and Crown Point. This volume takes the reader up to the eve of Wolfes invasion of Quebec City. These pages contain the exact articles presented to the reader as originally published; there are facts, rumors, exaggerations, unconfirmed reports and several downright falsehoods. Extracts of private letters from the different frontiers, forts and settlements, describe atrocities committed by the French, the Canadians and their Indian allies. Includes reproductions of 19th-century battle maps of Ticonderoga, Louisbourg, and Quebec.

golladays in america: second printing
Birth, marriage, and death records at various county courthouses in several states were searched for dates, parental connections, and locations of events. Federal census records were also searched for family locations and connections, origins, occupations, and related information, where they existed. Grave yards, church records, family bibles, and related sources were sought and searched. Genealogies of other families prepared by others on display at various public and collegiate libraries were used as source material. Also private correspondence with descendants provided much information.

history of kings county, nova scotia, heart of the acadian land: giving a sketch of the french and their expulsion: and a history of the new england planters who came in their stead, with many genealogies, 1604-1910
In 1755, the French residents of Kings County were forcibly deported and a new population of families from New England, including over thirty thousand Loyalists, took up residence in their stead. It is with these successors "...and their institutions and their deeds that the volume here introduced will be found chiefly to deal." The first portion of this work covers: Kings County, the Micmac Indians, the Acadian French, the expulsion of the Acadians, the settlement of Cornwallis and Horton by New England planters; the townships of Aylesford, Parrsborough, Kentville, Wolfville, Canning, Berwick and other places; county government with listings of public officials, roads and dyke building, industry, architecture, domestic life; religion and churches; education, literature, politics, county militia, and significant events. The second half of this book is devoted to genealogical sketches, grouped by family name and containing birth, death, marriage and offspring information for male descendents, as well as biographical sketches of significant figures. A chronological list of important events, a list of the population at different periods (1763-1901), lists of land grantees within several chapters, and an index of subjects and full names add to the value of this work.

in search of your canadian roots: tracing your family tree in canada 3rd edition
This is the first book by Angus Baxter to deal exclusively with the sources available for genealogical research within Canada. He discusses the great migrations of Scots, Irish, English, Germans, Huguenots, Ukrainians, and Jews to Canada; covers the National Archives in Ottawa, with its holdings of censuses, parish registers, naturalization records, land and homestead records, and military records; and even summarizes the holdings of the LDS Church relating to Canada. But the best is a step-by-step guide to the records and record repositories in each of the eleven provinces and the Yukon and the Northwest territories. Comprising the bulk of the book, this core section has a detailed breakdown--by province and territory--of vital records, wills, land records, censuses, church records, newspapers and books, and it then lists the libraries, societies, and archives, and their major holdings and ongoing projects. Finally, there is a chapter that tells you how to use the data to build a family tree or write a family history.
