| This work contains biographical material on landed families and individuals of Lowland Scotland, including the following: Forester of the Torwood; Thomas Maule of Panmure; Alexander Nisbet; Craufurd of Crosbie; Fergusson of Kilkerran; James Nasmyth; Sir William Nairne, Lord Dunsinnan; George Fergusson, Lord Hermond; and John Cockburn of Ormistoun. These particular families and the history of their estates were chosen by the author because of a particular accomplishment or quality which elevated them among the other landed gentlemen of the Lowlands. But the emphasis is upon the entwined strands of loyalty to the land and loyalty to the family which most distinguishes these particular choices.
