HUGUENOT GENEALOGIES. A Revised Selected Preliminary List, 2001
| Mr. Finnell, a noted Huguenot authority, is also the Registrar-General of the National Huguenot Society. Clearfield Company, which has also published the National Huguenot Society Bible Records-compiled by Mr. Finnell in 1997-is pleased to offer this new bibliography of Huguenot Genealogies. In deciding which books and articles to include in this collection, Mr. Finnells rule of thumb was to include family histories whose progenitors and early descendants, at least, could be documented as having Huguenot ancestry. Thus, families listed in the 1995 Register of Qualified Huguenot Ancestors of the National Huguenot Society will be represented among the genealogies found in this bibliography. About 700 titles are cited in all, and they are arranged in alphabetical order of the principal family of the genealogy. In each case the citation gives the full title of the work, the author, year and sometimes place of publication, and, in the case of articles from journals, the volume and issue of the periodical. Mr. Finnell is careful to point out that while some of these sources may be difficult to locate, many can be found in large public libraries or in the library of the National Huguenot Society of America in St. Paul, Minnesota, or in the Huguenot Society of South Carolina. (Mr. Finnell welcomes readers comments in anticipation of future editions of this work.) - United States - General Reference - Huguenot |

THE ORDER OF AMERICANS OF ARMORIAL ANCESTRY. Lineage of Members
| The Order of Americans of Armorial Ancestry was founded by Mrs. William Gerry (Emma Hardy) Slade on September 15, 1903. It is the only lineage organization based on the right to bear arms as a qualification for membership. The objectives of the Order are the promotion of genealogical, biographical, and historical research, with emphasis on the ancestry of American Families of Armorial Descent. The arms to which each Order members most recent American ancestor was entitled, through either his/her paternal or maternal ancestry, is the basis for this new Clearfield publication. Drawing on the official lineage records of the Order, Mr. Finnell, the Registrar General, has arranged the information in three parts. First comes the lineages of the more than 700 members admitted to the order since its inception, arranged in order of membership. For the most part the lineages give the names of husband and wife in each generation, with their dates of birth and death and date of marriage, all the way back to the armorial ancestor. The lineages are followed by a section of 300 black and white coats-of-arms (complete with descriptions of colors, etc.) drawn two-to-a-page by the artist, Thomas Pelham Curtis II. Preceding the arms themselves is a very helpful glossary of heraldic terms. At the back of the volume, the compiler has assembled two indexes: a name index to the nearly 20,000 persons identified in the lineages, and another to the arms which arranges all the bearers in alphabetical order. Since the vast majority of the lineages go back to the 17th century or earlier and since they have never before been published, this rich collection of venerable ancestries must rank as one of the most important contributions to colonial genealogy in recent years. - United States - General Reference - Heraldry |
