Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was one of the first four towns established in the state. Its beginnings are generally dated to 1623, when David Thompson set up a trading post at Odiornes Point. This history is presented in chronological order to 1823, and is filled with interesting historical and biographical data. A short appendix reproduces several early documents. The author graduated from Dartmouth College in 1775 and served as Clerk of the Superior Court of New Hampshire for forty-two years.
